Student Attendance

All students must attend school every day.  Lynwood High School believes that arriving to class on time builds responsibility and maximizes instructional time that leads to increased student achievement and success. Students may recover "unexcused" and "unverified" absences by attending Saturday School from 8:30 am - 12:30 p.m. Saturday School dates will be shared with you by administrators and/or teachers.

 

Phone calls: The LHS Attendance Office receives phone calls between the hours of 7:30 a.m.- 10 a.m. If your call is not answered, please leave a detailed message regarding clearing your students absences (name, student ID number, Ed. Code reason to excuse absence). Please allow for 3-5 days for the absence to be cleared if you must leave a message (messages are addressed as soon as possible). The fastest way to clear your child's absences is to send a note with them and have them take it to the Attendance Office between the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Parents may also email attendance notes to the Attendance Clerks at [email protected] or [email protected] or Ms. Andrews, Assistant Principal, at [email protected] .

Parent(s) or Guardian(s)' notes: Students need to turn in notes form parents or guardians to the Attendance Office before 8:30 A.M.  The attendance clerks need to process and verify the information before the students are allowed to go home.  Students who turn in the notes a few minutes before they need to leave campus may be subjected to delays.

 

Excused Absences: There are some excused absences according to Education Code 48201 such as: illness, quarantine, medical, dental, optometrist or chiropractic services, funeral for immediate family (not to exceed more than three (3) days if outside of California), justifiable personal reasons (ex. Religious retreat, court appearance, etc.).

 

Irregular Attendance: Although some absences are excused, Education Code 48403 defines certain absences as irregular attendance.  Examples of irregular attendance are: "excessive excused absence - illness, medical or dental appointments during school hours, excused tardies and other."  Another example of irregular attendance is "excessive unexcused absences: frequent vacations, errands for parents or other reasons during school time.:  We highly recommend that parents/guardians set up appointments for dentists, doctors, etc. after school or during the weekends/breaks.

 

Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without a valid excused for ten percent (10%) or more of the school days in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date, is deemed a chronic truant.  Any pupil is deemed a habitual truant who has been reported as a truant three (3) or more times per school year.
